Do not stare at me because I am dark By Mettabel Okulaja.

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
It is the sun that has burned me.
Sideline me and give flack,
Or think me a *dun-dee.
Huh huh huh? Like you can’t hear me
All because you think I have an ‘acc-cint’

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
It is the sun that has burned me
Dark and lustrous, chocolate to molasses
Still it’s rich red blood that runs through my skin and bones

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
I wear white, and very well too…
Red, yellow, peaches and cream
Also compliment my style supreme

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
Cos I choose to praise Him with my back
Midnight folk songs, songs of praise,
Beating drums, Rhythm and blues,
All I serve Him, to bring praise too

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
MY money’s also made with green and white
No depreciation, or wrong allocation
All given by God, for my dispensation

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
Braids down my back, Hmmm no remark?
**Didi-ing and weaving, felingo ‘fros
All exist to display my fl–ow….

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
Listen to me I’ll show you the way back
All from one root, Planted by God,
Hybridized, grafted – Moses’s sprouting Rod

Do not stare at me because I am dark
Dark I am, the texture to your tone
‘Cos He created, to not live alone
It is not good, No – It is not good!!!

Do not stare at me because I am dark,
Except you stare in awe
As you see you in me,
Knowing that we all are the same
That…

I am dark,
Only because the sun has burned me…
